Silence Is Not Always Gold

“Silence is gold” is a popular saying in which many people have belief. To these people speaking too much is not a merit. However, if you always keep silent, you will probably miss many golden opportunities instead of obtaining the gold of silence.

Last week I read an article written by an office lady. The company where she worked had two kinds of offices: cubicle office and window office. As a new employee she worked in a cubicle office together with twenty colleagues. Two years later she still worked there but some colleagues who came later than her had moved into the window office. She felt confused. One day one colleague told her that window office wasn’t obtained without request. But believing that she certainly gained one if she did a good job the woman had never asked for it.

From the woman’s experience we learn that silence is not always gold. In the modern society one needs to speak his mind and speak for his own interests.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a letter. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese:

假设你是Tony,是英语一班二年级学生,因有事不能上外教Ms. Riddle 的课,给她写一张请假条,说明你不能来上课的原因。

Dear Ms. Riddle,

I would like to know if I could ask for a casual leave of absence from your Oral English class this Thursday morning.

Yesterday afternoon I got a phone call from my cousin, who is now operating a small company in suburbs of this city. He needs an interpreter for two days but cannot find the most trustworthy person, so he wants me to make an attempt. It seems to me that this is a golden opportunity to put what I have learned in your class into practice, but I need your permission of absence. If you think I may go and help him overcome the difficulty, I am confident that I’ll do a good job and both of us will be thankful.

Earnestly yours,

Tony

Should grad student be paid higher than non-grads?

Should grad students be paid higher than non-grads?

In our country, it is obvious now that the university graduates earn more money than non-graduates. I quite agree with those graduates who have paid a lot for their studies and expect to make more for either himself or his family.

However, it is not so optimistically for those who hope to make it. The critical career competition makes them frustrated due to many factors involved. One of the utmost factors is that they feel what they anticipate is not matching up with what they have found in reality. Many university graduates are not satisfied with what they get for what they have done. As a matter of fact, some of them expect so unrealistic that they immediately lose the credit to the workforce they belong to.

On the contrary, some of the non-grads who are more realistic in career hunting tend to get more satisfied job compared with graduates. Thus what really matters here in salary balance is how one can contribute to the organization rather than what background they hold. The tuition is really high in China. Many high quality students due to this have lost their academic pursuit. Any responsible government should inevitably take this burden and put more money in order to bring up better next generation for the nation.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic A Job-searching Experience. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline given below in Chinese:

A Job-searching Experience

Last Friday my English teacher told me that one of her friends was looking for an English governess. I asked for her friend’s name and phone number. I determined to seize the chance and have my first job.

I was a little nervous when I went to the woman’s house. I was told that the talk between us that day would decide whether I could take the job. However, when the woman, Lucy as she was called, welcomed me into her house, I felt much relaxed. I thought as long as I was sincere and friendly I would perform well. The conversation went on smoothly. She seemed much more interested in my habits and hobbies than how good I was at English. It happened that we have the same hobby: playing tennis. I told her about my family and school life. Obviously I succeeded and from then on I went to teach her English every weekend.

Lucy told me later that it was my sincerity that made her willingly accept me. It is true that we can play some tricks while seeking for a job, but remember to be sincere. It’s the secret of my success.
